Demaking a video game is almost as popular as remaking one these days, with several very talented indivudals reimagining popular titles as if they were first released on older systems. The most high-profile demake was undoubtedly the PS1 demake of Bloodborne by developer Lilith Walther, which rocketed up to 100,000 downloads when it was first made available earlier this year.

Well, Bloodborne is no longer the only PlayStation property to get the demake treatment as Redditor ZeoNyph has reimagined Horizon Zero Dawn as a PS1 game, and it looks pretty spectacular. ZeoNyph uploaded a short video to Reddit earlier this week, complete with a wonderfully retro title screen that they use to get to the gameplay.

THEGAMER VIDEO OF THE DAY

Once they do, we first see Aloy in her blocky form standing next to a roaring campfire. Aloy then runs over to a nearby cliff, climbs to the top, and a cutscene plays which introduces us to what a Watcher would look like in 1996. The cutscene ends and Aloy is very swiftly flattened, perfectly recreating the brutal difficulty of those older PS1 titles. The world then turns black and Aloy slumps to the floor as a Dark Souls-esque "You Died" appears.

ZeoNyph doesn't go into much detail about how they made this video, but lets other people know that everything was "modelled, rendered, and textured" by them in Blender. As you might expect, there's nothing but love for ZeoNyph's project in the replies, with many praising them for being able to perfectly recreate the aesthetic of a PS1 game.

If you want to see some more demakes of modern games, you don't have to look very far before you find some pretty great examples. In fact, 2022's most popular title so far was also turned into a demake, as one Elden Ring fan is currently attempting to recreate the game on the original Gameboy. Another recent example saw one enthusiastic Portal fan reimagine the game as a Nintendo 64 title, while a Super Mario Sunshine fan recently showed off their attempt to turn the game into something you'd see on the Gameboy Advance.
